Devendra Banhart Details New Album and Shares "Für Hildegard von Bingen"

One of folk music’s most eccentric characters, Devendra Banhart, will release his eight studio album, Mala, on March 12 through Nonesuch. The album was recorded in the Los Angeles home he lived in at the time, and in typical Banhart fashion, there is a quirky twist: he and guitarist Noah Georgeson recorded it on a vintage Tascam from a pawn shop.

“A lot of early hip-hop had been made on [the Tascam],” he explained, “and knowing my songs are not hip-hop whatsoever, we thought it would be interesting to see how these kinds of songs would sound on equipment that was used to record our favorite rap.”

Banhart painted the cover art for Mala, and the album includes a song called “Hatchet Wound,” so that should be interesting.
