What's That Song From The New Heineken Commercial?

1.

Every now and then, inspiration for a post comes from an unlikely source. Today it was a text from my mom.

“I love that Heineken commercial where the Amy Winehouse-type woman sings, ‘I want to write you a love letter.’ Who is she?”

My mother is no music expert, but she has good taste. She raised me on everything from The Beatles to Michael Jackson to Jimmy Cliff, and as I’ve gotten older and more obsessed with music I’ve made sure that she’s up on newer artists like Lykke Li, Danny Brown, and Frank Ocean. Since she was curious about this track, it’s likely that other people are too. I told her I’d have to do a post.

“Yes for sure,” she texted back. “Has a wide appeal—makes me want to take up drinking!”

It turns out that the group from the beer commercial is Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes. They’re an Australian group who dropped their debut album, Baby Caught the Bus, in November of 2011. Their soulful, retro sound makes it almost impossible not to make the obvious comparison to Amy Winehouse, who Claire is a big fan of and calls one of her favorite singers of all time.
