When we listed The 30 Best Underground Hip-Hop Albums, Typical Cats came in at number 12 for their self-titled 2001 debut. A lot has changed since then, but the Chicago trio of Qwel, Denizen Kane, and Qwazaar are linking back up for their first group album since 2004, and there’s something surprisingly refreshing about these three voices and those jazzy, dusty beats provided by DJ Natural. As hip-hop branches out into all kinds of new directions, the existence of Typical Cats is proof that there’s still room for passion, artistry, and underground hip-hop.
