The Brian Jonestown Massacre - "Straight Up and Down (Boardwalk Empire Theme Song)"

1.

If you haven’t been watching the Martin Scorsese-produced HBO television series Boardwalk Empire, which just recently wrapped up its first season, than you’ve been missing out on one of the best shows on television. Set in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the 1920s and Prohibition, it’s basically Mad Men (which is good if there’s been a lack of impeccable three-piece suits in your television viewing since the season ended) meets The Sopranos with bootleggers and mobsters. What does this have to do with music you ask? I couldn’t get enough of the show’s opening theme song, so I did a little digging, and found out the track used is “Straight Up and Down” by San Francisco psychedelic-rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It’s from the band’s 1996 album Take It from the Man!. Listen to it below, and let me know what you think – I’d have to say it’s probably my favourite theme song from any new television show this year (next to Aloe Blacc‘s “I Need A Dollar” being used in the opening credits of How To Make It In America that is).
