Video + MP3! The Morning Benders - "Excuses"

Yours Truly Presents: The Morning Benders “Excuses” from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

“Excuses” is The Morning Benders‘ opening track off the Chris Taylor (of Grizzly Bear) produced EP called Big Echo. The band also shot a really cool video of the song being played using the Phil Spector Wall Of Sound method, which involved gathering as many artsy looking musicians as they could and putting them in the studio all at once. The results are excellent.

The song features a team layers and textures that you might expect from anything with a connection to Grizzly Bear, but it also has a throwback element, er, many throwback elements. For one, the beat of the song sounds almost like a waltz. In order to dance to this, I feel like I should go rent a tuxedo first. The strings section sounds like an old familiar part of all your favorite 50’s love songs. There’s a whole section of “dum, da dum, da da da dum dum dum” type sounds that I haven’t heard in a song since the last time I was stuck listening to my dad’s music, and the melody features notes that most modern rock bands probably don’t know exist. Enough talk, this is a really great song. Check it out.
