“21 Guns” is Green Day’s latest single from their 21st Century Breakdown album. Its video was directed by Marc Webb, whose film debut (500) Days of Summer comes out in July and stars Zooey Deschanel. Webb’s previous work with My Chemical Romance and Weezer means he was well prepared to deliver a slick, moody, smokey clip anchored by an unchallenging plot. Lots of bullets fly through the room where Green Day serenades a couple and some fish. Everyone survives the bullets, but I’m not sure that the viewers’ sense of good times makes it past the video’s literal visuals (if you wanted to see a cracked mirror as Billie Joe Armstrong sings about broken glass, check out the edit around 1:48).
