Rico Nasty has a bone to pick with fans who ask her to twerk during her concerts.
In an interview with XXL, the “SIMP” rapper said asking a female rapper to twerk is “probably the worst thing” you can ask of her while she performs.
“Even if she is gonna twerk, even if that’s what she does, even if you’re at a club and someone’s hosting and she’s just the IG baddie,” Rico said as she held up a phone with the word across the screen. “This is so disrespectful.”
While Rico admitted she could see the humor in asking a performer to twerk, she said it ultimately feels diminishing as n rapper to be asked to twerk because it was her talents on the mic that put her on the stage, not her ability to twerk.
“It’s pointing to [twerking] ever being why I’m on a stage, or this pertaining to anything that I’ve ever done in my career. That’s not what I do. You go on my Instagram right now. Do I have videos doing this?” Rico asked. “There’s people that do and they look great doing it, but I don’t do this. So you’re at the wrong stage bro. This is crazy.”
She added that young girls shouldn’t ever feel pressure to twerk.
“I mean, you do what you wanna do and it’s lit and it’s fun but for people who, just, like I’m just trying to make art and perform my songs and go,” she explained. “I’m not trying to be something that I’m not. You shouldn’t try to make somebody something that they’re not. Cause once I do, right? Succumb to the standards of beauty and what you guys want me to be and I get the look, right? Then you’ll say that’s all that I am.”
Rico has had a difficult time on the road lately. She took to Twitter in November to address the hardships she experienced as an opener on Playboi Carti’s King Vamp Tour, which saw her getting booed during a performance at the Forum in Los Angeles.
“I dead ass need at least two hours out of each day. To just cry,” Rico tweeted at the time. “Crazy how I wanted a tour bus my whole life and now I just be on the tour bus crying myself to sleep every night 😂.”
Fans soon expressed their support for the D.C. rapper online, after she followed up her tweet with another more concerning tweet.
“I wish I was dead just as much as y’all do trust me,” she wrote. “Y’all win.” She deleted all of the tweets soon after posting.
