About four years ago, I got put onto an Atlanta DJ who was going by the name Hipnotikk. Back then, I was documenting the many instances in which the hip-hop scene was interacting with dubstep and many forms of the UK bass music scene. Aside from some of my compatriots (including DAD staffer Nappy), young Hipnotikk was pushing the "refix" aspect, taking the acapellas of southern rap stars and affixing them to current dubstep treats. We'd interacted on a number of occasions, forming conglomerates and just keeping tabs on not only the developing rap/dance music hybrid scene, but on the projects of those who were looking to take this sound to the next level.
Over these last few years, he's shortened his name to HPNTK, taken to producing some huge records, and getting his feet wet, release-wise. He rolls with the FREAKSTEP crew down there, who are helping keep the bass music scene alive in the South. Back in May he was in an awful ordeal where he got shot outside of a club he was booked to play at, but has recuperated and is back in action, which is evidenced in his contribution to the DAD Mix Series, "SQUAD UP!, VOL. 1." Not only does he show how massive his productions are, but he comes correct with tune selection, featuring consistent bangers from the likes of BeazyTymes, Debrocka, XTENDO, GANG$IGN$, and many others. This mix is a problem, hands down, and should help you turn up on a Tuesday.
