Diddy joins the growing list of music figures who have paid tribute to Clarence Avant, a legendary industry veteran who was affectionately known as the “Black Godfather.”

The Bad Boy founder took to Instagram on Wednesday to share an emotional tribute to Avant and recognize the indelible mark he left on the music world. Diddy praised the North Carolina native for his fearlessness, loyalty, and unwavering support for those who followed in his footsteps. The post featured two photos of Diddy with Avant; one showed him embracing the music mogul at the 2020 Pre-Grammy Gala and the other showed him standing next to Avant and Jay-Z at the 2020 Roc Nation brunch.

“Clarence Avant was the definition of a free, fearless Black man,” Diddy began. “He never allowed any level of adversity or limitation stop him from paving his own path and advocating for Black creators to be valued and respected at the highest level. He was a very successful record executive, entrepreneur and dealmaker. But more importantly, he was the most trusted and reliable relationship anyone could have.”

Diddy not only lauded Avant for being a connector, problem-solver, and selfless mentor, but he also commended him for being an inspiring pioneer within the industry.

“He kicked down doors, shattered stereotypes, and showed all of us aspiring leaders that nothing is more important than impact,” Diddy continued. “[Clarence] Avant was the definition of leading by example and lifting your people up with you. He was never selfish with information. He wanted to see us all win and would stand with us in the fight. He was more than someone I looked up to, he became one of my most beloved mentors and friends who taught me how to always show up. Clarence Avant always answered the call."

“We will forever honor his legacy, cherish the memories, and continue to remind the world of his story.”

Avant died Aug. 13 at his Los Angeles home surrounded by his beloved family: son Alex Avant; daughter Nicole Avant; and son-in-law Ted Sarandos. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was 92.

“Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and associates that have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come,” his family wrote in a statement to People magazine. “The joy of his legacy eases the sorrow of our loss.”

Avant’s cause of death had not been shared as of press time.
