"XO" is the purest love song on Beyoncé's surprise new self-titled album. Its accompanying Terry Richardson-directed video recalls the joyous adrenaline rush of falling in love. In the clip we see Beyoncé at Coney Island, riding a roller coaster and being followed by a mob of fans and extras, including, for some reason, a TMZ cameraman.
In setting the video at a carnival, and shooting it in soft blues and pinks, Richardson plays off the themes of budding romance—big fluffy teddy bears after knocking down the milk jugs, a first kiss on the Ferris wheel, etc. Its tone is both appropriate and a cut against much of the album, but Beyoncé still should have had Greg Mottola direct it.
