Earlier today (March 14), Jamaican dancehall legend Vybz Kartel—real name Adidja Palmer—won his appeal in a London court over his 2014 murder conviction, per the BBC.

The decision came after 48-year-old Palmer—whose hits include “Summer Time”, “Romping Shop” and “Fever”—and his co-defendants launched their final possible appeal at the Privy Council in London, the final court of appeal in Jamaica and some other Commonwealth countries. Palmer has been in jail since 2011 in relation to the disappearance of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.

No body was ever discovered, but Palmer was convited in 2014 along with three co-defendants after a 64-day trial in Kingston, Jamaica, one of the longest in the country’s history. Palmer was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 35 years, later reduced on appeal to 32-and-a-half.

The UK Privy Council has instructed Jamaica’s Court of Appeal to determine whether or not to grant Palmer and his co-defendants a re-trial.

This is a developing story.
