Since he left Arctic Monkeys back in 2006, the band's former bassist Andy Nicholson has been involved with numerous projects — including being one half of Sticky Blood, producing for UK hip-hop four-piece Clubs & Spades and running his own studio — but now he's taking centre stage with his new project Goldteeth. His first release fronting the new band will be a self-titled EP, due for release later this year, and today he's unveiled the first single from the project, "Doin Better".
Like the rest of the EP, "Doin Better" was written and recorded by Nicholson to be then translated from the studio to stage with a five-piece band with added vocals from Hannah Yadi. The effect is a swooning, funk-inflected piece of futuristic pop with glowing '70s synths for an added disco edge.
Speaking with Complex via email, Nicholson explained: "'Doin Better' was the first song I made at the start of this whole project. I made the instrumental then did a writing session with Hannah Yadi — a great songwriter and the perfect voice for this song. Lyrically, it's a positive message, saying even though we aren't together anymore and have gone in different directions — I hope that you're ok. I just want people to know it can always get better."
