In hip-hop, there is more to recognize than just the music. The Hip Hop Caucus, founded in 2004, is a non-partisan organization headed by “Hip Hop Rev” Lennox Yearwood Jr. The purpose of this organization is to empower youth minority voters. Many celebrities have supported this mission, notably Sean “Diddy” Combs and Russell Simmons with the 2004 “Vote or Die” campaign. Others include T.I. and Keyshia Cole who spearheaded the 2008 “Respect My Vote!” campaign that helped spread awareness.
The upcoming presidential election should be no different. The Hip Hop Caucus has called on Atlanta’s own 2 Chainz to become a spokesperson for the campaign. He plans to engage the young people and minority votes by sharing his experiences and bringing positivity into their communities.
Along with Chainz, the Hip Hop Caucus has enlisted Travis Porter and DJ Red Alert to help jumpstart this powerful campaign. As Rev. Yearwood stated, he hopes using hip-hop will help empower democracy in this country. Check out some photos above of everyone this past Memorial Weekend.
