Hip-hop twitter accounts were abuzz with prayer and well wishes yesterday evening as news broke that Guru, one half of legendary rap group Gang Starr, was hospitalized after suffering a cardiac arrest. The Boston native, who's stern, monotone delivery is regularly cited as one of hip hop's all-time greatest voices is only 43 years old, making the circumstance all the more unfortunate and surprising. Though most are well familiar with his early work as the rapping half of Gang Starr alongside DJ Premier or his Jazzmatazz series of hip hop/jazz fusion records, Guru had just released a solo album called Guru 8.0: Lost And Found in the spring of last year with producer Solar. Guru's name, a backronym that stands for "Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal" foretells the wealth of knowledge he attempted to spread.
