As women in hip-hop dominated the early months of 2019, rap’s high-profile femcees extended their run into August. In addition to Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj releasing their much-anticipated “Hot Girl Summer” single this month, Saweetie followed her unlikely hit, “My Type,” with an official remix featuring City Girls and Jhene Aiko.

Doja Cat also sent timelines into a frenzy recently, after the rapper released a tantalizing video for her latest single, “Juicy.” Perhaps the most surprising release from a woman in hip-hop this month came from the legendary Missy Elliott. In anticipation of receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award during the 2019 VMAs, Elliott dropped a surprise EP, ICONOLOGY, accompanied by a stunning visual for the song “Throw It Back.”

Elliott’s compact five-song project is her first body of work in 14 years, yet the Virginia-born visionary wasn’t the only act to make a triumphant return to music within the past few weeks. Famed North Carolina rap group Little Brother also reappeared in the mix (sans producer 9th Wonder), releasing their reunion album, May the Lord Watch.

With solid projects also coming from Rick Ross and Rapsody (Port of Miami 2 and Eve, respectively), August has been a month particularly rich with listening options. However, the most playlist-friendly release of the month without a doubt belongs to Young Thug.

Three different songs from Thug’s enthused and energetic So Much Fun LP landed on Amazon Music’s Rap Rotation. To listen to those songs, as well as tracks from all of the aforementioned albums and artists, check out the playlist below. And keep it locked on Rap Rotation every Friday for the latest hip-hop music.
