The last time Jamaican dancehall artist Nemesis and Mississauga producer Chillaa connected was on “Call Me,” a breezy Ramriddlz joint that spread like wildfire after getting Diplo’s attention. This time, they’ve linked up with Toronto vocalist/producer Rizzla on a salacious ode to the original bad gal.
“Call Me” came together while Chilla (born Kamal Palmer) was on summer vacation in Jamaica in 2013, but “Bad Gal Like RiRi” was created remotely out of necessity. Chillaa and Rizzla finalized the beat in Canada, trading off vocal duties on the hook, and sent it to Nemesis (born Michael Dennis), who recorded the verses in his home studio in Mandeville, Jamaica.
“I just wanted to bring a new vibe to the industry, make a song that could get people up and moving, and put them in a good mood,” Chillaa told Complex via email. A thumping bassline and an orchestral synth lead dominate the infectious instrumental, while Rizzla and Chillaa envision their ideal woman throughout the aspirational, autotuned hook. Nemesis’ commanding vocal is in line with many by-the-book instructional dancehall anthems, leaving no question as to how you should dance to “Bad Gal Like RiRi”: “Bend yuh back now, paraplegic/Buss a bad wine, let me see it.”
