7 Lines From Lorde's 'Melodrama' That Describe the Phases of Your Crumbling Relationship

Lorde is a fantastic writer. On her latest album, 'Melodrama' she even chronicles *your* breakup.

Lorde’s sophomore effort Melodrama is, at first listen, something of a lyrical masterpiece. Packed with raw emotion, she chronicles the highs and, more often, lows, of a dissolving relationship. The 20-year-old pop star has had a way with language since she burst onto the scene with 2013’s Pure Heroine, capable of painting pictures with words and putting the listener in the story, and on Melodrama she shifts into a higher gear. Below are seven Lorde lyrics that describe the phases of your latest flame burning out.

When You Know It’s Wrong But It Feels Right

Song: “Homemade Dynamite”
Line: “Okay I know that you are not my type/(Still I fall)/I’m just the sucker who let you fill her mind”

You know the feeling when you’re not even supposed to have feelings for someone and you know you’re not right for each other, but somehow you can’t get them off your mind? Welcome to the beginning of the end.

When Your Ex Starts Seeing Someone New and Tries a Little Too Hard

Song: “Green Light”
Line: “I know about what you did and I wanna scream the truth/She thinks you love the beach, you're such a damn liar”

Talk about adding insult to injury. Not only did Lorde’s ex cheat on her, but he then proceeds to lie to his new flame to try to impress her by saying he loves the beach. Like, why.

When Your Sober Mind Tells You No But Drunk You Says, "Sure"

Song: “Sober”
Line: “But my hips have missed your hips/So, let's get to know the kicks”

Appropriately titled “Sober,” this lyric describes when you’re anything but. This is the phase when you’re a little bit intoxicated and the feelings you’re trying to suppress come out to play.

When You Read Way Too Much Into Everything

Song: “The Louvre”
Line: “I am your sweetheart psychopathic crush/Drink up your movements, still I can't get enough/I overthink your punctuation use”

Really bad drinking game: a shot for each time you stared at the three gray dots and then over overanalyzed a text message from your crush. Lorde gets it.

When the Memories Creep In and You Really Start Missing Your Ex

Song: “Supercut”
Line: “We were wild and fluorescent, come home to my heart”

Then comes the moment of genuinely missing someone once the alcohol has worn off. Sigh.

When You Start to Refocus on What You Need

Song: “Hard Feelings/Loveless”
Line: “I care for myself the way I used to care about you”

Instead of spending all your energy loving and taking care of someone else, it’s time to focus that energy on yourself

When You Make Your Ex Understand That, Actually, They're Screwed

Song: “Writer In the Dark”
Line: “Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark/Now she's gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart”
