Ariana Grande’s song “7 Rings” is stirring up controversy once again.
A songwriter named Josh Stone has claimed that Grande ripped off his lyrics and melody on “7 Rings,” TMZ reports. Stone has alleged in a new lawsuit that he wrote a song titled “You Need It, I Got It” in January 2017, two years before Grande recorded her song.
Stone stated in his suit that the hook in Grande’s song, “I want it, I got it, I want it, I got it” is very similar to his hook, “You need it, I got it. You want it, I got it.” He also says both songs have identical metrical placement of the paired phrases.
Stone says he met with music industry executives and producers, including ones from Universal Music Group, which published “7 Rings.” According to the songwriter, he also took a meeting with Tommy Brown in 2017, who worked with Grande on her five studio albums. Stone says that Brown liked Stone’s song.
Stone wants profits from “7 Rings” and an order from a judge banning the track from “seeing daylight,” TMZ reports.
“7 Rings” has met its fair share of controversy since it dropped in 2019. Not only was the hook an obvious sample of 1959's “My Favorite Things,” but Soulja Boy accused Grande of biting his flow, Princess Nokia alleged that Grande took her lyrics, and it was also tied to 2 Chainz’s Pink Trap House attraction. Later, critics also suggested that Grande was appropriating rap for streams.
