Kanye West’s most prominent production signature is arguably his use of samples. Any album he works on is full of them, but according to acclaimed house DJ David Morales, Ye just took a sample from him without permission.
“So yes, that is my bass line that I did over 25 years ago. Nobody asked me any permission, nobody gave me any love, no points, no royalty, not even a coupon to Walmart,” the New Yorker said in a video posted to Instagram. “Damn, you know what I’m sayin? But nonetheless, I’m going on record—this is my bass line."
Complex has reached out to Kanye's rep for comment.
The 25-year-old track he’s referring to is a remix Morales did of Alexander Lewis’ song “What Is This Thing Called Love.” Upon comparison, the bass lines of the two songs do sound strikingly similar, but you can listen for yourself below.
Ronny J, CBMix, DJ Clark Kent, and Kanye West are all credited for producing the new single, which came with a super meme-able video of West and Lil Pump in giant outfits.
