Chris Brown’s “Back to Sleep” has been highlighted by music critics as one of the better songs off his seventh studio album Royalty. The song has spent considerable amount of weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, but Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino isn’t happy with the record’s message and how it perpetrates rape culture.
In a series of tweets, Cosentino, who is known to be vocal about sexism in the music industry, says Brown’s hook for the song is “trash” and disapproves of anyone who believes “it’s OK to sing about fucking a girl back to sleep and telling her to not say a word.” She believes that media outlets shouldn’t be so supportive of a song that promotes rape.
Brown’s “Back to Sleep” continues to get remixes from music’s biggest names. To date, the song has guest appearances from Zayn Malik, Usher, August Alsina, Miguel, Trey Songz, Tank, R. Kelly and Anthony Hamilton through separate remixes. Check them out here, here and here.
