De La Soul launched a Kickstarter campaign in hopes to fund their eighth studio album, and today they achieved that with an insane amount of money.
The proper follow-up to 2004’s The Grind Date will feature Damon Albarn (of Blur/Gorillaz), 2 Chainz, Little Dragon, and David Byrne (of Talking Heads). While the Kickstarter aimed to raise $110,000, the final tally was $600,829.
The album is their first in eleven years. And it will feature original samples from De La Soul and the Rhythm Roots All-Stars. “Over the last three years, we've collaborated with some of LA's finest studio musicians and recorded them in free-styled, unrehearsed, jam sessions,” they wrote on their Kickstarter page. “With over 200 hours of sounds, and vibes, equal to about 250 to 300 full-length vinyl LPs, it's time that we get to the work.”
Here’s the best part: “We are now in the process of going back to that 200+ hours of music, listening, enjoying and discovering those special moments where, musically, something magical happens, where interesting sounds and layers were forgotten, where new sounds can be sampled, looped, chopped, filtered and arranged, freely, without the intrusive presence of publishing politics and the infamous 'sample police.'"
Listen to their collaboration with Nas, “God It,” here. For those who contributed to their Kickstarter, they offered a variety of goodies including shopping with De La Soul and limited edition colored vinyl LPs and a 7” singles.
