An explosion has been confirmed at New York City's Port Authority. The explosion occurred during morning rush hour and major evacuations were ordered in the area, NBC Newsreported.
A single suspect, who reportedly sustained a "minor injury," is in NYPD custody. He has been identified as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, a Brooklyn resident who police believe was inspired by ISIS. The NYPD is reporting he was wearing an "improvised low-tech explosive device" during his attack. They are also calling the incident "terror-related."
The New York Police Department first confirmed Monday morning they were "responding to reports of an explosion of unknown origin at 42nd Street and 8th Ave." A, C, and E lines were being evacuated. "Info is preliminary," an NYPD spokesperson said.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the explosion.
"As I was making my way toward the outside, I kept getting shoved by cops and there were cops at every entrance blocking and there was police and SWAT everywhere," witness Francisco Ramirez toldCNN. "It was scary. It was just a lot of chaos but I didn't see any injuries."
