A man has been arrested after police say he shot himself in the leg while dreaming about a home intruder, at which point he woke up.
According to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois, the man—identified as 62-year-old Mark Dicara—told responding deputies that he was having a dream of someone “breaking into his home” when he grabbed his .357 Magnum Revolver. While still asleep, the man claimed, he fired a shot in the direction of the home intruder in his dream, only to hit his own leg. At this moment, law enforcement says, Dicara’s dream came to a presumably startling end.
When deputies first showed up at Dicara’s home, they noticed he was losing “a significant amount of blood,” so they applied a tourniquet to his leg. As for the eventual arrest, it was determined that Dicara—despite owning a gun—had previously had his Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card revoked. He’s since been charged with possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card and reckless discharge of a firearm, both of which are felonies.
“It was confirmed there was not a burglary attempt at Dicara’s residence,” the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.
Per a report from regional outlet WFLD, Dicara has since been released on bail and is expected to make another court appearance later this month.
