A Washington state man was arrested last week after he was caught chugging gasoline during an alleged home invasion.
According to the New York Post, the incident occurred Friday morning in Seattle, when a 17-year-old girl allegedly saw a man trying to break into her family’s home. The teen, who was alone at the time, immediately called her dad, who then notified police. Local authorities said they arrived at the residence around 11:30 a.m., but the girl was too scared to answer the door for the responding officers.
A few moments later, police heard a banging noise coming from inside the house, which prompted them to breach the front door and search for the 17-year-old. At one point during the sweep, officers found a 40-year-old man had locked himself in a car inside the family’s garage. Bodycam footage showed officers repeatedly telling the man to exit the vehicle and put his hands in the air. The man refused to comply and began chugging gasoline from a red can.
“Put it down,” officers can be heard shouting. “Open the door or we’ll bust it open!”
After several attempts, the police used a hammer to break the driver’s seat window, which prompted the man to take more swigs from the can. A struggle ensues, but police managed to remove the man from the car and place him in handcuffs.
According to the Seattle Police Department, emergency personnel provided medical aid to the man, who was later transported to King County Jail. He was ultimately charged with residential burglary. It remains unclear if he’s still in custody.
Authorities said the teen was found safe on the home’s second floor.
