Six adults were hospitalized after sustaining wounds from a shooting at a school campus in East Oakland, California early Wednesday afternoon.
KPIX 5 reporter Katie Nielsen shared the press release to parents of students from the Oakland Unified School District, indicating the shooting occurred at the King Estate Campus, which “houses the co-located Rudsdale Continuation and Newcomer high schools, BayTech Charter School, and the headquarters of Sojourner Truth Independent Study, which has no students at the site.”
“When officers arrived on scene they ‘immediately’ made entry into the school and found six adults who had ‘some affiliation with the school’ suffering from gunshot wounds,” CNN writes, citing Oakland Police Assistant Chief Darren Allison and noting the campus is comprised of middle and high schools.
Alameda County Health System spokesperson Eleanor Ajala told the San Francisco Chronicle that the three people taken to Highland Hospital are in critical condition. The status of the other three transported to Eden Medical Center is unknown. The identities of the six victims have not been revealed.
In a tweet condemning the shooting, Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf said investigators informed her that the six individuals in question are adults.
The Oakland Police Department announced via Twitter that an investigation into a shooting in the 8200 block of Fontaine Street is underway.
Alameda County Sheriff spokesperson Lt. Ray Kelly confirmed the situation is “no longer active.”
Nielsen said witnesses saw three people step out of a car and open fire before returning to the vehicle and fleeing the scene.
UPDATE – Witnesses tell investigators a car with 3 gunman pulled up, got out, opened fire, & left.
Total of 6 injured – 1 with critical injuries. Students are being taken to a reunification area near Mountain Blvd & Fontaine St, which looks like Points of Light Church. @KPIXtv
