Authorities have identified three suspects in connection to the fatal shooting of Joshua Brown, a key witness in the Amber Guyger murder trial.
As reported byABC News, police have issued three arrest warrants for 22-year-old Thaddeous Charles Green, 32-year-old Michael Diaz Mitchell, and 20-year-old Jacquerious Mitchell, all of whom reside in Louisiana. Dallas PD Assistant Chief Avery Moore confirmed the news during a Tuesday press conference, refuting theories that local law enforcement was behind the shooting.
"The rumors shared by community leaders that Mr. Brown’s death was related to the Amber Guyger trial and that the Dallas Police Department was responsible are false," Moore said. "We encourage those leaders to be mindful because their words may jeopardize the integrity of the city of Dallas and Dallas Police Department."
Moore told reporters the three suspects drove to the victim's apartment complex Friday night for a prearranged drug deal; at some point during the meet-up, Brown allegedly shot Jacquerious Mitchell, which prompted Michael Mitchell to open fire on Brown. Authorities said they executed a subsequent search warrant on Brown's apartment, where they seized 12 pounds of marijuana, 143 grams of THC cartridges, and $4,157 in cash.
Jacquerious Mitchell is in police custody at a Dallas hospital, while the other two suspects are remain at large.
Brown was gunned down outside his apartment complex Friday night, just a day after former Dallas police officer Guyger was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder of Botham Jean. Brown, who was Jean's neighbor, took the stand during the trial and was expected to testify in the Jean family's civil case against the Dallas PD.
Brown's emotional testimony challenged Guyger's claims about what had happened on the night of Jean's death. The then-officer said she had ended a nearly 14-hour shift when she mistakenly entered Jean's apartment, believing it was her own. Guyger said she thought Jean was an intruder and shouted demands at him before opening fire. Brown told the jury he did not hear the woman shout verbal commands or warnings.
"Brown's testimony was powerful, but it was also duplicative," said Lee Merritt, the Jean family's attorney. "Nothing he testified to couldn't have been brought in by other witnesses. It wasn't worth his life."
Avery said all three suspects will face capital murder charges.
