Millennials are struggling to get high-paying jobs and buy houses the same way previous generations have, and as we all know by now, they have avocado toast to blame. Earlier this year, millionaire Tim Gurner said, "When I was trying to buy my first home, I wasn't buying smashed avocado for $19 and four coffees at $4 each." As a millennial, it's easy to relate, as I too struggle with my avocado-related finances. I spend more on avocados each month than I do rent, and it's starting to stress me out.
That's why it's heartbreaking to hear about the crash that happened in Texas this week, when 18 tonnes worth of avocados were charred and destroyed following an incident. The truck transporting the incredibly precious cargo swerved and crashed, leaving no one injured but plenty of avocados incinerated on the road. The Texas department of public safety has said a mechanical issue with the truck resulted in the avocado graveyard, and the incident saw the highway closed for more than three hours.
The green mess that covered the road was apparently being shipped from Mexico, the world's largest avocado exporter. The U.S. has become the world's largest avocado consumer, thanks to its rising popularity with financially reckless young people, apparently. As the Financial Times points out, avocado prices have more than doubled since the beginning of 2017, probably because the forces that be want the youth to remain poor.
With incidents such as this, avocado toast lovers will have to expect even further price hikes. Hopefully Tim Gurner, a man who clearly has everything figured out, can help all these kids budget properly as prices for avocado toast reach new heights.
