Let's face it. People are pretty fucking dumb. That's why, years into this whole climate change awareness thing, there are still an amount of people greater than zero who think it's all part of some elaborate hoax to take away their tractor or whatever.
That's why there's very real excitement surrounding the Green New Deal, backed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey. The segment was discussed in detail on the latest episode of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight Sunday, complete with some Bill Nye mini-experiments and a refreshingly no-bullshit attitude to pointing out the direness.
"Here, I've got an experiment for you," Nye said near the end of the 19-minute Last Week Tonight clip above. "Safety glasses on. By the end of this century, if emissions keep rising, the average temperature on Earth could go up another four to eight degrees. What I'm saying is the planet's on fucking fire. There are a lot of things we could do to put it out. Are any of them free? No! Of course not! Nothing's free, you idiots. Grow the fuck up. You're not children anymore. I didn't mind explaining photosynthesis to you when you were 12 but you're adults now and this is an actual crisis. Got it? Safety glasses off, motherfuckers."
