Wayne Rooney has become the first Premier League player to hit the 10 million follower mark on Twitter.

The England and Manchester United captain reached the landmark on Monday and becomes the fifth-most followed footballer on Twitter and the sixth-most popular athlete.

It's about time Wayne Rooney has something to smile about. He's currently serving a three-match ban with Manchester United after stupidly kicking out at West Ham's Stewart Downing last week.

Here's how the most popular athletes on Twitter rank.

With only 366,000 followers, @usasoccerguy was nowhere to be found.

In terms of UK Twitter personalities, Rooney is ninth overall, 11m followers behind One Direction's Harry Styles in top spot.

Manchester United were pretty happy with Rooney's achievement.
