One of Laura Mvula's biggest, most obvious strengths is her truly unique voice—there's something simultaneously timeless and progressive about her style—and Royce Wood Junior knows this. The original version of "Overcome", a collab with none other than Nile Rodgers, was a taut funk banger, but RWJ, whilst respecting that, has added a welcome flair of wildness to the track. Awkward drum fills, pastoral textures and an inspired use of space leave us with a track as suited to the club as it is an expensive set of headphones or speaker system. If these two want to do an album together, we'd be absolutely fine with that.
