There are a lot of offensive tattoos out there, but this one really hit a nerve. Naomi Michelle Coleman, a British tourist in Sri Lanka, unknowingly stirred up trouble because she has a tattoo of a Buddha on her arm. Authorities have arrested Coleman for "hurting others' religious feelings," according a police spokesman, and she is facing deportation.
Coleman is currently being held at an immigration camp in Sri Lanka and is expected to be deported within days. Her offending body art was brought to police attention at the Bandaranaike International Airport on Monday. It features a Buddha sitting on a lotus flower.
The British High Commission in Colombo said, "We are aware of the case and are providing appropriate consular assistance."
This is not the first time tourists have misunderstood the sacredness of Buddha imagery in Sri Lanka. Last year, a British tourist wasn't allowed in the country because he spoke "disrespectfully" when asked about his Buddha tattoo. And three French tourists were given suspended prison sentences for kissing a Buddha statue two years ago.
