Launched in 2020 by artist, designer and founder of A-COLD-WALL* Samuel Ross, the Black British Artist Grants programme has been working to counter the shrinking pool of resources available to aspiring and emerging Black British artists.

The core of the scheme is that each year, 10 successful applicants are awarded £2,500 each as well as invaluable mentorship from established artists and figures within the arts. But it’s more than just giving a leg-up—it’s also about addressing diversity and integration as well as boosting access and visibility for Black British artists right across the spectrum of the creative sector, specifically design, graphic design, fine art, furniture, sculpture, and fashion.

Since its inception, the Black British Artist Grants programme has already helped 30 young artists, designers and business owners, including furniture designer Mac Collins, photographer Ronan Mckenzie and architect Dominique Petite-Frère, and on a community level, they’ve also donated and supported organisations like BLM UK.

This year, Ross has brought in Grace Wales Bonner, founder and artistic director of Wales Bonner, to assist as a guest advisor. Also joining the programme’s advisory board this year is art historian, broadcaster and director of V&A East, Dr Gus Casely-Hayford.

Applications for the grant and mentorship are now open at community.samuel-ross.com, and closes on August 29.
