Amir Khan will go head-to-head with the most devastating man in boxing if he wins his next fight.
The Bolton boxer is jumping two weight classes to fight Mexican power puncher Canelo Alvarez for the WBC world middleweight title on May 7th and if he upsets the odds to win that belt, he's already contracted to fight pound-for-pound king Gennady Golovkin in a unification bout.
Golovkin – with 31 KOs from 34 wins – has taken on Floyd Mayweather's mantle as the best boxer on the planet and his promoter, Tom Loeffler, says everything in place for Khan or Alvarez to meet him later this year:
Golovkin holds the WBA, IBF and WBC Interim world middleweight titles.
With Khan having stepped up two weight classes to take a brave fight with Alvarez, he's certainly the underdog.
The British silver medalist from the 2004 Olympic Games has famously chased career-defining fights with Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in the past, but they've failed to come off and are unlikely to happen in his future.
It looks likely that Khan's decision to fight Alvarez could be motivated by a potential Golovkin clash further down the line, giving him the superfight he's always craved.
