With the playoffs looming, versatile Sydney Kings forward Josh Childress reportedly has NBA teams interested in his services.
Despite his age (32) and season-long injury issues, the interest from NBA teams is well-founded, as Childress managed to average 21 points and 7.85 rebounds per game in a challenging Kings campaign. He was particularly good over the last week of the NBL season, earning Player Of The Week honours with 28ppg and 11rpg while shooting 50% on three point attempts.
Childress will begin his journey back to the NBA in the D-League, where playoff-bound NBA teams looking for key pieces will be fishing for talent. Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Childress spoke about the challenge ahead.
“If there was no interest, probably with my situation I wouldn’t have pursued it as a player.
“It’s an interesting process, one that I haven’t gone through before and it is exciting.”
“I owe it to myself to explore opportunities and I definitely feel this is an opportunity I want to pursue.
“I’m under contract at the Kings with a player option, so I do have the opportunity to come back. I’ve enjoyed my time in Sydney — and I’m not saying that in a manner that I’m not coming back.”
Fellow import and Kings teammate Marcus Thornton will also be trying his hand in the D-League. Childress still has a player option left on his Kings contract, and will be back in purple and gold if an NBA offer doesn't surface.
“I’m still a King and I think I will be unless anything major happens or if I get signed by an NBA team,” he said.
