Some very sad news to pass along, as a 16-year-old sophomore at a New York City private school died after an on-field collision during a soccer game earlier this week.

Here are the details, via Gothamist:

Thomas Jakelich was playing for Loyola High School against the United Nations International School at Randalls Island that afternoon when he ran crashed into a player on the rival team. He had to be carried off the field, but was conscious during an ambulance ride to Harlem Hospital Center, the New York Post wrote.

It's crazy to think that a collision on the soccer field could result in something this tragic, but it's a solemn reminder that any sport can end up seriously injuring someone under the right set of circumstances.
