Jay Barker, who led the Alabama Crimson Tide to a national championship in 1992, has avoided jail time after allegedly trying to hit his wife with his car.
According to TMZ, Barker, 49, has agreed to a “best interest plea” in the domestic violence assault on his wife, country singer Sara Evans. Barker previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless endangerment after being charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Back in January, Barker allegedly tried to hit his wife with his car in Nashville as she left a party at her neighbor’s house. Evans claims Barker backed up his vehicle “at a high rate of speed attempting to hit them.” He missed and there was no collision.
“Court docs show Jay was put on a year of probation as part of his plea deal … and we’re told he has to keep his nose clean, forfeit all weapons and complete a 26-week batterers intervention program,” TMZ reports.
The couple are currently in the process of getting divorced, prosecutors told WKRN-TV.
As the starting quarterback for the University of Alabama, Barker led the Crimson Tide to a 35–2–1 record, which at the time was the NCAA record for most wins for a college quarterback. Barker was drafted in the fifth round of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, but did not make the team. He later played three years in the CFL.
