It was just a week ago when Cristiano Ronaldo became the highest paid soccer player after signing a huge five-year, $206 million contract with Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid. Well apparently there’s more coming his way, as sources indicate the international superstar is on the verge of signing a renewed endorsement deal with Nike worth upwards of $64 million over the course of the next five years.

Ronaldo is currently in the last year of a previous five-year deal signed with Nike in 2010. Now, with the world-class striker seemingly locked in for another half decade with Real Madrid, Nike is looking to further lock down the world’s most popular athlete—based on the number of Facebook followers (Ronaldo has the most at 60 million).

Especially with the 2014 Brazil World Cup approaching fast, the huge marketing potential for Ronaldo is pretty apparent on a global level. After all, you know Nike has a serious arsenal of soccer footwear lined up for the biggest stage in the sport. And what better player to showcase the next generation of Swoosh-branded boots than the electrifying Cristiano Ronaldo.
