The US has been declared an "enemy of the Internet" by Reporters Without Borders, whose annual list of the same name highlights governments whose digital censorship and surveillance practices run counter to freedom of information.
"The mass surveillance methods...many of them exposed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, are all the more intolerable because they will be used and indeed are already being used by authoritarians countries such as Iran, China, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to justify their own violations of freedom of information," the report reads.
President Obama has made numerous claims of devotion to a free Internet, but the US landed on the list for the first time this year, in the wake of reports about the NSA's shady mass surveillance activity.
