One abortion clinic remains in the state of Mississippi, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit will entertain arguments regarding whether or not it should close next week.
In 2012, a law passed that would force doctors at abortion clinics to be certified in both gynecology and obstetrics and that clinics have admitting privileges at area hospitals. While lawmakers wanted to ensure that women were getting the best treatment possible, the governor and other state legislators weren't shy about exposing their mission to make Mississippi an abortion free state by closing the Jackson Women's Health Organization.
Refusing to go down without a fight, the clinic sued and Judge Daniel P. Jordan III handed out a preliminary injunction last year branding the law unconstitutional. While the clinic lacks admitting privileges, owner Diane Derzis told the National Journal they applied to every hospital and were ultimately rejected.
