The popular fighting game/film series Mortal Kombat is receiving a sequel to the movie that came out in 2021, and Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater will pen the story. His other credits include The Umbrella Academy, 2015’s Fantastic Four, and Death Note.

Deadline notes no director or cast is attached to New Line’s sequel to the adaptation of the game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Mortal Kombat came out in April 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously. It starred Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano, and Chin Han, with Simon McQuoid directing.

Little is known about the Mortal Kombat sequel beyond Slater’s involvement, but the screenwriter has had an impressive run bringing fantastical worlds to life. His latest endeavor, Moon Knight, looks to breathe life into a lesser known Marvel hero, who’ll be played by Oscar Isaac.

We also might be getting Johnny Cage in the sequel, based on the first installment’s ending.

“We knew we needed to lay a little bit of rail toward him,” McQuoid said. “We never talked about sequels. We don’t presume anything like that. It’s very one step at a time. But we did feel that we needed to lay a few joiners, his being one of them.”

While there’s no release date set for the sequel, this early movement is a good sign.
