Todd McFarlane undoubtedly wants to get a Spawn reboot onto the big screen, but not so much so that he's willing to compromise on a set of demands he's making if, say, a studio were equally as eager.
Though this prospective movie was announced almost three years ago, and is looking more and more like it's stuck in development hell, McFarlane hasn't abandoned all hope that the project will ever come to fruition. As it turns out, in a recent interview published by Shoryuken, the longtime comic book creator/artist said that there's just a few things that are a must for the movie to be made, everything else can be negotiated.
"I have very few demands for the movie," he said before laying them out. "It has to be Rated R, there’s no debate around that. With the story I want to tell...I am less concerned about what happens in the movie as long as Spawn is “cool” and “badass.” The last demand is that I am the director. That’s it. Everything else is up for conversation.”
Depending on how you parse that it can be broken down as two or three or maybe even four demands. The "cool" and "badass" part sounds separate from the rating, but in either event they're all a requirement.
According to his IMDB page, McFarlane's last directing credit came in 2009 for a "video short" (see: music video) for Disturbed's "Land of Confusion."
That seems like a hurdle.
In addition to that, production reportedly hit another snag last week when a star financiers were depending upon backed out due to a scheduling conflict. That person remained unnamed, but if you care enough to Google you can see the guesses.
"Last week I got some discouraging news, we had an Academy Award-winning guy who was going to do the movie with us, but he fell off," McFarlane revealed. "We had people willing to fund the movie as long as we had this guy attached but schedules were conflicting, and things had to change. That’s how close we are to getting this thing off the ground."
That quote ends on a degree of optimism.
The movie is yet to get a distributor or (obviously) a release date. So, uh, be optimistic or pessimistic. It doesn't matter, the cosmos don't care either way.
