If you’ve heard of Bonnie and Clyde—and most of you have—then you know that girls in the '30s were anything but the demure flowers we think of when we imagine our great-grandmothers. Sure, there were all shapes and sizes of woman during Prohibition, and your great-grandma probably wasn’t some hardened criminal. But, you have to give it up women like Bonnie Parker, who was a straight gangster whether or not she ever pulled the trigger, or stage and film star Helen Morgan, who made her name performing at Chicago speakeasies (not exactly easy crowds) before going legit. The new film Lawless, set in Virginia bootlegging country, features equally fierce and determined women, played by two of today’s hottest young actresses, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska. In the film, Chastain’s Maggie and Wasikowska’s Bertha are love interests for characters played by Tom Hardy and Shia Labeouf—but take our word for it, they are so much more. Lawless is in theaters now, so you can go see for yourself what makes these women so dangerous, and so resilient.
