New Microparticle Injections Could Allow For Patients To Remain Alive While Not Breathing

As Google proved yesterday, improvements in consumer electronics are certainly impressive. Yet, at the end of the day, advances in medicine vastly overshadow them. A team of scientists at the Boston Children’s Hospital made one such breakthrough, developing microparticles that when injected into the bloodstream of a patient not breathing, can oxygenate the body and allow them to stay alive for up to 30 minutes.

The particles are comprised of a layer of fat lipids, with 3-4 times the oxygen content of a red blood cell inside, and can be suspended in a liquid solution handled easily by any paramedic. Thus, its utility in emergency-response situations could potentially save millions of lives.
