'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Continues to Drop at the Box Office

The film made only $8 million on its second Friday, making a 77 percent decrease from its disappointing first-day sales.

Solo: A Star Wars Story failed to recover.

Though there was considerable buzz surrounding the Han Solo-centered project, the film debuted to less-than-stellar box office returns, racking in only $103 million over Memorial Day weekend. Experts attributed the disappointing figures to a number of factors: the controversial director shift during production, perceived over-saturation of Stars Wars films and the fact it arrived on the heels of two huge blockbuster hits: The Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2. Many assumed the latter was the primary factor in Solo’s flop.

“There's a question of frequency, and how many times people will go to the movies,” Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis told The Hollywood Reporter. “Is this too much and too soon for a third time in a five-week period?”

Hollis went to say he was optimistic about Solo’s future, and was hopeful that the film would rebound in its second week. But, as pointed out by Forbes, it's unlikely that this will be the case.

The publication reports Solo earned only $8.1 million domestically during its second Friday in theaters. That’s about a 77 percent decline from the $35.6 million it earned during its first Friday. This puts Solo just under $128 million domestically since its debut last week, putting it at risk of becoming the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film to hit the big screen.
