Well this is a relief for those of us who dread the day when box-office tallies drive studios to make sure everything is PG-13.
22 Jump Street, a member of the increasingly rare breed of big-budget, R-rated studio films, has earned a very respectable $60 million in its opening weekend.
That was followed by the weekend's No. 2 movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2 which did $50 million in ticket sales.
Dragon did win the weekend internationally, though, earning a $28.4 million compared to Jump Street's $6.9 million overseas.
It was an impressive showing for the two sequels, which both started out as spring releases, but graduated to the summer for their second installments after both became huge hits.
Jump Street is now claims the second-highest opening weekend ever for an R-rated comedy (the completely undeserving Hangover II still has the No. 1 spot).
Jump Street stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as undercover officers who pose as college students to bust a campus drug dealer. Hill actually appears in both films, lending his voice to "Snotlout" in the animated feature Dragon as well.
