David Ayer (End of Watch, Fury) is prepping for Suicide Squad, the first Warner Brothers' DC Universe film separate from The Justice League franchise that is being set-up by the Batman v. Superman film that's set for 2016. Margot Robbie has dropped some hints on her Focus press tour that, Squad, a supervillain team-up movie will be "more on the scale of The Dark Knight than The Avengers." Promising words, but not exactly surprising. Warner Brothers was late to the connected universe game, but Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy has definitely set the tone for their universe.
Robbie will play Harley Quinn, the frequent accomplice and girlfriend of The Joker. If you don't recall—a little controversial—Jared Leto is set to play The Joker in Suicide Squad. But DC defenders will remind you that everyone was skeptical of Heath Ledger's Joker casting before he put an indelible stamp on the character.
According to Ayer's twitter, Leto's now officially locked in—because the actor has lost the the Jesus locks he's been sporting ever since he won an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club (photo above). More like, Sacrificial Squad. This is Leto's first role since Buyers Club. Between his band, Dallas Buyers Club, Fight Club, and Suicide Squad, it's obvious that the dude excels with a group by his side.
For the unacquainted, Suicide Squad revolves around a bunch of baddies in the DC Universe who undertake dangerous missions in exchange for commuted sentences. In addition to Leto and Robbie, Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, and possibly Joel Kinnaman (it's not determined yet if he's replaced Tom Hardy) will be the villains. Viola Davis is the Nick Fury-overseer character of this renegade gang.
