Rick Boss, a Las Vegas filmmaker, has a new movie out in 2021 that imagines an alternate reality in which the late icon 2Pac is still alive thanks to an elaborate escape plot involving a body double and a relocation to New Mexico.
The movie, tentatively titled 2Pac: The Great Escape From UMC, is currently in production. In an interview with regional outlet KTNV, Boss claimed that the film's story is inspired by "facts" he's obtained "through certain people" he knows.
"This movie is about 2Pac actually escaping from the University Medical Center here in Vegas and relocating to New Mexico and getting protection from the Navajo tribe," he said of the plot. As for the specifics of this purported escape, Boss noted that a "private helicopter" would have been required.
"When certain FBI agencies are looking for you, the first thing they're gonna do is block the airport so you can't travel out, so the best way to escape is helicopter—private helicopter—to another state," he said.
And while Boss seemingly comes from the perspective of treating the movie's story as being factually informed, the actor playing 2Pac is certain that the beloved artist died in 1996.
"He's gone but he lives on," actor Richard Garcia said. "Like you said, like his mother said, he lives on through all of us and through our memories and through our hearts and through our tribute."
Boss and his team are said to be aiming for a 2021 release.
All Eyez on Me, the most recent 2Pac biopic starring Demetrius Shipp Jr. and helmed by director Benny Boom, was met with a lukewarm critical response upon its release in 2017. The film notably ends with a depiction of the 1996 Vegas shooting.
