We reported yesterday that George R. R. Martin, the creator of the Game of Thrones franchise and the person you should ultimately blame if you're tired of hearing about this show, doesn’t watch the series. But today, Martin has come out to clarify his statements: he does watch the show, but just hasn’t been keeping up to date with this current season.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Martin claims that he does not recall ever claiming that he doesn’t watch the show. However, he has just recently returned from a month-long trip to New Jersey, New York, and Helsinki, and for that reason hasn’t watched any television, meaning he is behind on season 7 of Game of Thrones. Hopefully, that also means he's been shielded from all the insane fan theories bubbling this season, especially in anticipation of the season finale.
Entertainment Weekly also points out that Martin posts a lot about the show, including trailers, on his blog, hosts screenings in his theater in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and always has kind words for the show’s actors, producers, and crew. Martin is heavily involved in the production of the show and is also playing a key role in helping to develop the many spin-off projects that HBO is brewing. All of these are set to be prequels to the current Game of Thrones show.
Martin does not, however, discuss the show’s merits, especially since the show has started to deviate from what Martin has written, mostly because they’ve already depicted everything in the books. Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have officially gone beyond their original source material, Martin’s five A Song of Ice and Fire books, as fans the world over wait for Martin’s much anticipated sixth book, The Winds of Winter.
The final episode of season seven of Game of Thrones will air Sunday at 9 PM ET. It will be the longest episode of the show ever, clocking in at 80 minutes.
