Chinese 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Poster Accused of Editing out People of Colour (and Chewbacca)

John Boyega is made much smaller, and Chewbacca is gone completely.

Marketing for films tends to vary from territory to territory—posters and trailers will play up different elements or cast members, depending on what’s popular in that country. But there’s something a little off about this Chinese poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Spot the difference?

On first glance, it looks pretty similar to the US poster, but if you look closer, the key black and Hispanic cast members have all been shrunken or removed. John Boyega has been greatly reduced, and Lupita Nyong'o and Oscar Isaac have both been removed completely. Oh, and Chewbacca has gone, so maybe they don’t like Wookies either.

People have complained on social media.

Star Wars' Finn (who happens to be black) and Chewbacca (happens to be Wookiee) get shafted in China. HT @asmuniz pic.twitter.com/ATpvcd51L6

When asked by CNN, a representative from Disney declined to comment.
