Sorry, That 'Series of Unfortunate Events' Trailer Is Fake

But it still looks cool as hell.

Remember last fall when Netflix announced it would be turning Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events books into an original TV series, a decade-plus after the Jim Carrey-starring film? It's been a minute since we heard any further updates on that project, but yesterday an eerie teaser appeared in the wild from a YouTube user named "Eleanora Poe," which, as hardcore Snicket fans will know, is the name of the Editor-in-Chief of the series' fictional paper, The Daily Punctilio. The teaser made rounds on severalsites, many wondering if this YouTube user was part of Netflix's promotional game.

Unfortunately, the teaser is not real. This morning, a Netflix rep confirmed to Variety, "This was not released from Netflix and not anything official." Apparently the scenes in the trailer—which made it believable because they are too high quality to be fan-made—are taken from the 2004 film and soundtracked with Dresden Dolls' "Missed Me."

Real or fake, this has us more amped for the Netflix series than before, though the premiere date is still unavailable and many of the details are still under wraps. Until Netflix decides to drop a real trailer, watch the one above.
